1917-1918
Gresham, Multnomah County, Oregon, United States
Black and white photo postcard of Gresham School, a wooden building with three floors and a bell tower. Apparent on front of school is sign that says "School District No 4". Written in ink on the front of the photo: "Grade and High School - Gresham". There is a complete message written in ink on the back, partly obscured by a sticker that has "39-C" written on it. The message reads "The second last letter you said there was a package at Paris for you. I wonder if you have received the can of eats yet. Mrs. Hillon died last week. I went to the funeral. Emer[son sent] his grandmother a cable, and [that is] all they have ever heard from him. [It is] about 6 months now and they have never got a letter from him and cannot find any thing from him or where he is. Stanleys hear real often from Earl. Well this is all I can think of at present With love from Mother" "1901" is also written on the back.

The southwest corner of Powell and Walters, where this school stood, has been occupied by various school buildings since 1857. This building was constructed in 1901 as a combined elementary and high school. After the completion of Gresham High School in 1915, this building was replaced by a one-story elementary school in 1923 which became West Gresham Elementary.
The message on this postcard refers to young men away from home and a package waiting in Paris, suggesting that it was written to a soldier serving abroad during World War I. The sender and recipient are unknown. - Type
