- Donated by Mary Louise Chastain-Clay in 2001. The Palmer Method of Business Writing was a handwriting style and system of instruction developed by Austin Palmer in the 1880s. It emphasized muscle motion in the forearms rather than the fingers, and was used to teach rapid and legible cursive. It was the most popular handwriting system in the United States in the first half of the 20th century.
