- Description
- Photograph of a horse racetrack scoreboard at the Gresham Park Track in the Multnomah County Fairgrounds. The photograph was taken by Chester Buchtel, a fireman and one of the most prolific serial arsonists in Oregon history. - Provenance
- Found in collections. The Multnomah County Fair was held in Gresham from 1907 to 1969, and was a mainstay annual event in the area for much of that time. The racetrack took up nearly half of the 50 acres of the fairgrounds in Gresham, and was used for commercial horseracing during the fair. A report by the City Club of Portland in 1959, around the time that the photo was taken, argued for the elimination of racing from the fair, due its commercial, rather than community-oriented, nature.
