More about this item
- Description
- Photograph of Vista House and Crown Point in the Columbia River Gorge. The photograph was taken in winter, and there is snow across the landscape, with a thick layer of ice on the tree branches in the foreground, and what appears to be ice on the Columbia River itself.
- Provenance
- Donated by the Davidson Family in 2014. Crown Point is a basalt promontory on the Columbia River Gorge in eastern Multnomah County. It has an elevation of 733 feet. Vista House, an Art Nouveau style rest stop and observatory, opened on the point in 1918. The angle of the view in the postcard is a very unusual one, and may have been taken from Crown Point Chalet, a lodge on Crown Point that was open from 1915 to 1927 and situated in the approximate location of the photo.
