- John Metzger (1852-1929) and Eliza Ellen "Nellie" Winters (1867-1932) were married in 1882, when John was 30 years old and Nellie 16. Both were active members of Gresham's civic life, with John serving on the first Gresham city council in 1904 and later as city treasurer, and Nellie a charter member of the Rebekah Lodge, Neighbors of Woodcraft, and American Legion Auxiliary. They had seven sons.
